Description of trail

The route will introduce you to the diversity of plants and biotopes on the bank of the Gauja valley between the cliffs of Krimulda and Velnala.

Suitable for anyone interested in the plants, mushrooms, animals and bird species that live in Gauja National Park. A knowledgeable nature guide is advised for a complete introduction to the plants.

Lengths of the hiking trail: ~ 6 km; several hours depending on the interests of the travelers.

Description of the route: Cable car station on Krimulda side – Krimulda Estate – Upper part of Pilķene Cliff – Devil’s Rock – The lower part of Piļķene Cliff – Krimulda Serpentine Street – Cable car station on Krimulda side.

Level of difficulty: Easy

Recommended time: The range of species varies from month to month. At the end of April – the beginning of May you will see spring plants, later – summer plants. In autumn, you can spot a variety of mushrooms in the area of Pikene Cliff.

Road surface: Mainly forest roads and paths, unpaved roads, wooden stairs on the slopes of the valley. Near Krimulda Manor – asphalt and cobblestones.

Start/end point: Parking at the cable car station on the Krimulda side. 

Signs: The entire route is not marked in nature. Some parts of the route from Krimulda to Devil’s Rocks are marked with directions for cyclists.

Good to know

The route requires suitable hiking shoes, maps of Sigulda and Krimulda. A fully charged cell phone for navigation might be useful.

From Sigulda to the Krimulda parking lot you can get there by cable car, on foot, by electric vehicle and intercity bus.

 

Another option.

At Devil’s Rocks, you can cross the footbridge and see it from the opposite bank of the Gauja River.
